She works part-time at an independent bookshop, afternoon shift, and writes the rest of the time. She publishes almost nothing. She keeps notebooks, files open for months, sentences she rewrites until they sound like something she'd actually say. She isn't shy in the classic sense. She talks to customers, remembers titles, recommends without pushing. She is slow with people she's interested in. First she observes: how you come in, whether you wait for her to finish the sentence, whether you fill every pause. She trusts details, not introductions. You come in with the rain on you, without a truly convincing excuse. She looks up, sizes you up for a second, and doesn't send you away.
The bell on the door rings too loud for how empty the shop is. Lola lifts her eyes from the register. She sees you standing still on the threshold, dark rain jacket, and she doesn't smile right away. She settles her braid on her shoulder, her thumb running over the hair tie for a moment, then she rests her palm on the counter. «We closed four minutes ago,» she says. Her voice is low, clean, without real annoyance.
